One Piece was created by Eiichiro Oda, a manga prodigy who, even in his teens, was obsessed with pirates and Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball. Oda submitted his first successful one-shot, Wanted!, which caught the eye of Weekly Shonen Jump editors. Inspired by pirate tales like Treasure Island and real-world outlaws like Blackbeard, Oda began developing One Piece as a serialized manga.
The first chapter dropped in Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22, 1997. It followed the rubber-bodied dreamer Monkey D. Luffy, who sets off to become the King of the Pirates. From that humble beginning came an odyssey that would span over 1,000 chapters, an anime series with over 1,000 episodes, and billions of fans across the globe.
